Opening Totem Project

Opening Totem Project

Totem is a research project in which two artists create symbolic objects (Totems) using heart rhythm data from 16 different people.

Artists Beer van Geer and Julie de Ruijter created a tribe of Totems, 16 supernatural, symbolic objects that are connected to the inner world of 16 different people, including themselves. Full of enthusiasm and warmth they invite you to admire the ‘Totems’ from October 24 in The Grey Space in The Middle in The Hague, and to become part of their tribe through a Totem Ritual.

Totem is a research project in which the two artists create symbolic objects (Totems) using heart rhythm data from 16 different people. Our heart forms the bridge between the tangible and intangible world. For this research project, the artists have connected the tangible digital application that emerged from science with the intangible world of intuition that forms the basis for the arts.

From different spiritual traditions, the heart rhythm is specifically linked to one’s inner strength. In general, the heart rhythm is closely associated with natural cycles and transformation. Our heart rhythm is as unique as a fingerprint and is constantly changing, just like the rhythm of our environment. Julie and Beer have used the heart rhythm as a basis to investigate which archetypal shapes are hiding in our inner world. How to make this uniqueness tangible, and how to form a new Tribe from these tangible forms. The Tribe as a circle of connection that fits in with the present time, and which celebrates and welcomes transformation and uniqueness.
